Our Safeguarding Measures Include:
Rigorous Staff Screening: All staff undergo thorough background checks, reference verification, Montessori training verification, and safeguarding training before employment.
Supervised Environment: Children are supervised at all times with appropriate staff-to-child ratios that exceed regulatory requirements, following Montessori principles of respectful observation.
Secure Premises: Controlled access points, secure fencing, and monitored entry/exit procedures ensure only authorized individuals can access our facility.
Clear Policies: Comprehensive safeguarding policies covering child protection, behavior management, health and safety, and emergency procedures.

Child Safeguarding Policy
1. Policy Statement
Smart Steps Daycare & Kindergarten is committed to safeguarding and promoting the welfare of all children in our care. We recognize that all children, regardless of age, disability, gender, racial heritage, religious belief, sexual orientation, or identity, have the right to equal protection from all types of harm or abuse.
2. Purpose
This policy aims to:
- Provide a safe and secure environment for all children.
- Ensure all staff understand their responsibilities in safeguarding children.
- Establish clear procedures for identifying and responding to concerns.
- Work in partnership with parents and relevant authorities.
- Promote awareness of child protection issues among staff and parents
3. Key Principles
- Child-Centered Approach: The child’s welfare is paramount in all decisions and actions.
- Prevention: Proactive measures to prevent harm and promote wellbeing
- Early Intervention: Acting promptly on concerns before they escalate.
- Partnership: Working collaboratively with parents, guardians, and authorities.
- Accountability: Clear roles and responsibilities for all staff members.
4. Staff Responsibilities
All Staff Must:
- Complete mandatory safeguarding training upon employment and annually thereafter.
- Be vigilant and report any concerns about a child’s welfare immediately.
- Maintain professional boundaries with children at all times.
- Follow the school’s code of conduct and behavior management policies.
- Never use corporal punishment or harsh discipline methods.
- Document and report incidents, accidents, or unusual behaviors.
- Respect confidentiality while prioritizing child safety.
5. Recruitment and Screening
- Criminal background checks for all staff and volunteers.
- Verification of qualifications and Montessori training credentials.
- Minimum of two professional references checked thoroughly.
- Interview questions addressing safeguarding scenarios.
- Probationary period with ongoing assessment.
- Regular re-screening as per legal requirements.
6. Signs of Abuse – Recognition
Staff are trained to recognize indicators of:
- Physical Abuse: Unexplained injuries, bruises, burns, or marks.
- Emotional Abuse: Behavioral changes, withdrawal, anxiety, fear.
- Neglect: Poor hygiene, inadequate clothing, hunger, untreated medical issues.
- Sexual Abuse: Inappropriate sexual knowledge or behavior, physical signs.
7. Reporting Procedures
If a staff member has concerns about a child:
- Immediately inform the Designated Safeguarding Officer (DSO).
- Document observations factually and objectively.
- Do not investigate independently or confront alleged perpetrators.
- Maintain confidentiality – share information only on a need-to-know basis.
- DSO will assess and determine appropriate action within 24 hours
Report to relevant authorities (police, child protection services) as required by law. - Parents/guardians will be informed unless doing so would place the child at greater risk.
8. Physical Safety Measures
- Secure premises with controlled access and visitor sign-in procedures.
- CCTV monitoring in common areas (not in bathrooms/changing areas).
- Safe pick-up and drop-off protocols with authorized persons only
Regular safety inspections of facilities and equipment. - Fire drills and emergency evacuation procedures practiced regularly.
- First aid kits accessible and staff trained in pediatric first aid.
- Secure storage of cleaning supplies, medicines, and hazardous materials.
9. Online Safety & Photography
- Written parental consent required before photographing or filming children.
- Photos used only for agreed purposes (website, promotional materials).
- Children’s full names not published alongside photographs.
- Personal devices not used for taking photos of children.
- School devices password-protected with secure storage.
- Social media policy prohibiting unauthorized posting of children’s images.
10. Behavior Management
Our Montessori approach emphasizes:
- Positive reinforcement and encouragement.
- Natural consequences and logical problem-solving.
- Respectful communication at child’s eye level
Redirection and modeling appropriate behavior. - Prohibited: Physical punishment, harsh language, isolation as punishment, withholding food or comfort
11. Health & Hygiene
- Regular handwashing routines taught and supervised.
- Sick child policy to prevent spread of illness.
- Allergy and dietary restriction management.
- Medication administration only with written parental consent and documentation.
- Diaper changing procedures maintaining dignity and safety.
- Daily cleaning and sanitization of facilities and toys
12. Parent Partnership
- Parents provided with this policy upon enrollment.
- Regular communication about child’s wellbeing and development.
- Open-door policy for parent concerns and questions.
- Annual parent education sessions on child safety topics.
- Transparent incident reporting and follow-up procedures.
13. Allegations Against Staff
If an allegation is made against a staff member:
- The allegation will be taken seriously and investigated promptly.
- The staff member may be suspended pending investigation.
- Relevant authorities (police, licensing bodies) will be notified
Due process and confidentiality maintained for all parties. - Disciplinary action taken as appropriate, up to and including termination.
14. Record Keeping
- All safeguarding concerns documented factually and dated.
- Records stored securely with restricted access.
- Confidentiality maintained in accordance with data protection laws
Records retained as per legal requirements. - Information shared with authorities as legally required.
15. Policy Review
This policy is reviewed annually or following any safeguarding incident to ensure continued effectiveness and compliance with current legislation.
